Ian Geraghty I’ve always enjoyed driving from a young age and fortunate to become a Driving Instructor in 2018. However, my journey as a Driving Instructor didn’t start there! In 2012 I went through the old-style training and testing. Completing Part 1 & 2 test, I lost interest in the instructor ability and the rigidness of the pre-set test, memorising briefings and role play. So it was here my journey made an abrupt stop. My father and biggest supporter (who is also a driving instructor) quickly became my catalyst to again pursue a career as a driving instructor. He helped me to get fully qualified, aided by the changes to a client-centred and coaching approach. Although achieving an A grade, I am always looking to further my own knowledge & skills and to be able to pass this on to others. I started to explore different training providers and courses. Tri-Coaching Partnership and the BTEC Level 4 caught my eye, so I signed up to the BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development to gain a nationally recognised qualification and give me that opportunity to improve my abilities as a Driving Instructor and coach. This course opened my mind to the strengths of coaching and creating a client centred learning environment not only for the learners I teach but for myself and my continued self-reflection. Whilst completing the final steps of BTEC I attended the Transpersonal Coaching course. This afforded me greater insight into coaching and in turn my own development. It took the focus away from the learner and brought it back to myself and who I am. There is always more to know and learn. I am a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorist after passing the Advanced Driving Test in December 2021 with an interest in taking my own driving skills to a higher standard. Furthermore, I work for Young Driver providing driving experiences to 10 -17-year-olds promoting a safe driving for life approach in South Wales and the Southwest of England. I have previously completed a bachelor’s and Masters’ Degree in Drama with a focus on Reflective Practice, Community and Participatory Theatre; including facilitating drama workshops with young people and developing their skills in my local community. I have completed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
