I was talking to a friend’s son and he said, ‘My driving lessons are boring’, which got me thinking: how do we stimulate interest because as we all know some pupils are just hard work and that can switch off even the best ADI.
Here is a suggestion that can help stimulate your lessons so why not try this out on your clients and see what happens. First of all, you need to get to know your client by asking the following questions:
Do you know what your client’s driving interests are post-test?
How does their personality affect their lessons?
How might their personality affect their driving post-test or even on the test?
What happens to you when they seem tired or disinterested?
Once you have answered the questions above, you should be able to formulate an opinion of your client, which will help you create a scenario that is pertinent to their personality.
You have 3 ways you can do this: it could be just a discussion; it could be recreated in their drive; or you could do both.
By creating a scenario, such as, you have only 5 minutes to get from A-B to pick up your dream date (or whatever would motivate them) and you want to make a good impression, your mobile phone has no signal, and the journey takes 7 minutes if you stay within the speed limit. This kind of scenario encourages your client to reason what to do and then, if they actually drive, they can evaluate their driving, decide on the implications and the consequences of their actions or potential actions and make the lesson fit the sort of real-life situations that they are going to face once they pass the driving test. This will tackle all 4 levels of the Goals for Driver Education (GDE) and make your lessons fit the new standards.

I t has changed my outlook on how to get the very best from me and my students and this being almost the end of the year I can say that I have successfully helped 63 to pass a driving test and there is not one of them I would not like to meet on the road as I know they can all think for themselves!!

Carol Morley - Tri Coaching are a credit to the industry because they have actually done something to benefit it. How many can say that? They have transformed my passion for driver training especially after 25 years in the industry. Since completing the BTEC Level 4 my outlook has totally changed. Client Centred Learning is the best thing to happen to this industry, it can be used effectively in a class room environment, fleet training, police training, instructor training and learner driving. After the BTEC I decided to continue my development and completed a degree in Coaching and Driver Education. I couldn't thank them enough
