Last week I was sitting at my computer, working on draft assignments and answering emails and I was delighted to receive the following email from Sue Yates, who passed her Standards Check on 3rd May with 49 out of 51.
'Hi Susan I received my standards check letter on the 6th April and I booked it for the earliest date on the system after I had ordered ‘Route 51 - Pass your Standards Check’ so that left me around three weeks to make sure I was ready. The first two sections of ‘Route 51’ I found very similar to my everyday lessons and it took me back to the BTEC Level 4, which had a positive effect for me, in as much as it confirmed I was on the right track. Section Three – Risk Management - is fantastic because it really gives a good understanding of what is needed and breaks it down so it is easily understandable and can be adjusted so it suits my teaching style. I found this section particularly helpful. Sections Four and Five – Teaching and Learning Strategies – again, it was as though I was reading about myself and took me back to the BTEC Level 4. What I have found is that I am getting better at being aware of learning styles - I don't always get it right but I am definitely getting there with it. Encouraging pupils to take more responsibility and decision making and the biggest thing is learning to stay quiet which is the hardest thing but is definitely getting better. For my Standards Check, I took a learner who had taken about 25 hours of lessons and we did crossing traffic at traffic lights including filter arrows. I prepared for the day by taking section by section of Route 51 - I particularly like the reflection and evaluation parts as I found these extremely helpful. I took the book out with me every day and I practised with every pupil. Eventually it became more natural and I found it flowed more naturally the more I did it and became so I didn't need to keep checking the page so much for confirmation . Getting the wording right for me more on the opening statement was tricky at first but once I stopped worrying about it that again just flowed. The reflective questions are fantastic – they really make you think about what you did / what you could have done better / what will you do better next time. You really do have to think about what you actually did do - not what you think you did - and if something is missing or didn't go well how am I going to change it and what am I going to do about it? Along with the videos you really can't go wrong with the tools and resources in this course. I have recommended ‘Route 51’ to everyone that has approached me. You will probably hear from some of them – Well, I hope you do because it is definitely worth its weight in gold. Thankyou so much Susan - your BTEC 4 course definitely helped me massively and my love for the job just gets more and more every day. I would recommend ‘Route 51’ to everyone with a standards check and beyond – it is worth every penny. Kind regards Sue Yates ADI' |
