Reflective practices are important and should be used on your Standards Check

Reflective practices are so important

As a driving instructor the use of reflective practices has been growing and you, and your clients, are encouraged to keep reflective logs.
We all need a mirror; reflecting on our thoughts and experiences is essential to personal growth. A good coach will have expertise in the key skills of summarising, paraphrasing and using metaphors for clarifying thoughts.
Here is a little more about the differences between these key skills and why reflective practices are so important. Summarising sounds simple, but you really need to listen, not to just the words, but to the body language that accompanies the words.
When you feedback in this way, you are reflecting back to your client their own words, so they can hear them for themselves. This gives them the opportunity to examine their beliefs and opinions, which you’ve laid out in front them.
Your role is to allow them to examine their own stories and how they are telling them. It is useful to replay their body language to help them see their emotions, as they tell their stories.

Paraphrasing has similarities to summarising. The essential difference is you have put the reflection into your own words. This allows the client to see how others interpret their stories, helping them gain insight, and allowing them to explore their beliefs from a different perspective.
A metaphor sometimes will make the situation more comprehensible and help the client consider more deeply what they have been saying, helping to bring clarity to their story. You can use metaphors such as: 'that situation turned into a giant snowball once you got the ball rolling,’ which might be used to sum up a story that started as something quite trivial and just grew and grew. You could ask: ‘are you making a mountain out of a molehill’ or if the client sounds overwhelmed you could say: 'it sounds like you’re trying to push water up a hill'. You can also use that old adage: 'the bottom line is .................. ‘ which can be useful in summing up an entire emotional story.
For example, the bottom line is: 'you still want to leave your job.' If you are interested in improving your skills when reflecting back to your clients’ their thoughts and feelings, then you should look at our next coaching course.

The BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development is probably the most rewarding CPD that a driver trainer can invest in.

Trainers who are using the Tri-Coaching Instructor Training (TCIT) package are achieving phenomenal results with outstanding success. We are getting so many first time passes for Part 3, and as an ADI, you might know that's not an easy achievement, especially as the pass rate nestles around 35%.
We have achieved this by putting together a fantastic Train the Trainer course, which comes with guidance notes, back up and support to take you through how to train someone to become a driving instructor.
Why might you be interested in training to train people to become driving instructors:
  1. You get to grow your business
  2. There is a private Facebook group, with additional training materials, support and videos to guide you.
  3. There are follow up sessions to take you through any of the 12 modules that form the TCIT course.
  4. It is written in accordance with the DVSA National Rider/Driver Training Standards
  5. It is client-centred and focuses on HOW to teach, not WHAT to teach. You can find what to teach in a book and we will supply your trainees with those resource materials.
  6. The 12 modules cover 42 hours of training which is enough to qualify for a PDI licence.
  7. There are approximately 70 hours of additional training material given to your PDIs.
  8. The course will always be up to date.
  9. The course is designed by Tri-Coaching Partnership, the number one training provider of CPD to ADIs
  10. We are a multiple National Award-winning company because we focus on delivering more than is expected of us.
Here are a few recently made remarks in our private Facebook group, which you will become a part of.

  • You can choose to have the Tri-Coaching Instructor Training (TCIT) package dual-branded with your company name / logo
  • You will be able to advertise that you run an instructor training course
  • If you are not interested in delivering the course yourself, you could still have instructor training for your school and use a Tri-Coaching trainer to deliver it.
  • The TCIT package will be updated and amended to keep current with legislation and DVSA requirements
  • The TCIT package is your opportunity to make sure that you are up to date with the expected training standards required to become an ADI.
  • The TCIT package is focused on the DVSA National Driver Rider Training Standards, guaranteeing it fulfils the criteria for developing a client centred learning environment.
  • You will be able to deliver your own in-car training, confident that the online course is developing in the trainee all the skills they need to become a driving instructor.
  • The course comes with guidance notes that allow you to start your training business immediately.
  • There are 12 additional training sessions to support your course delivery.
  • Plus, marketing support and advice.
  • There is an additional module 13 that focuses on the training required when on a trainee license.
This two-day course will focus on how to update your training so that it is client-centred and will fit the DVSA National Driver and Rider Training Standard. You will be able to go away and start implementing these techniques into your ADI training immediately. Both days are delivered via zoom. The course looks at lesson planning, risk management, teaching and learning strategies and role play and focuses on training people to become driving instructors, rather than just getting them ready to pass a test.
There are limited places available on each course so book early.

aCCeLerate your skills to help you pass your standards check
There are lots of courses that provide information on what to do on your Standards Check, but there are not many training courses that focus on the skills you need to pass your Standards Check.
Our aCCeLerate training course focuses on developing those under-pinning skills, that all of us need, to give a truly great lesson.
ADIs know what to do, but with only around 25% gaining an A grade, there will be a number of ADIs who do not know, sufficiently well enough, how to do it.
Our aCCeLerate training course will fix that problem.

Coaching and Feedback

4/11/2021

Coaching and Feedback People become defensive very quickly, especially when they receive negative feedback. Negative feedback promotes a fear-based learning environment and can trigger a survival response in the brain: freeze, fight or flight. We naturally don't trust being told to act differently and this is one of the reasons people fear change. You may recognise this type of response if you are a driving instructor, when the switch was made from an instructor-led approach to client-centred learning. Resistance to change is difficult, our old behaviours are linked to fear of failure, fear of not being good enough or simply test-driven results. This is the number one problem with a fault-focused training approach based around test performance.

No wonder so many driving instructors blame nerves for their clients' failing tests. The fear of getting it wrong becomes overwhelming. Feedback that evolves around driving faults - and especially those faults committed on a driving test - adds to the fear factor. When someone gives you feedback it can often trigger, stress, shame, and fear. People have a tendency to hang onto the negative, no matter how you dress it up. Fault identification, fault analysis and remedial action, led by the driving instructor, is destructive towards the client's confidence; and trying to give ‘helpful’ information to people often raises their defensiveness and lowers their confidence. Your job is to grow their minds and create problem solvers and thinkers of the highest calibre, who are self-aware and can manage their own emotional intelligence.

If you want to learn about using coaching and the feedback tools of a coach, then we have a wide range of courses that will help you raise your own skills to another level. If you are interested in coaching for driver development, The BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development is the course for you.

If you are interested in becoming a coach outside of driver training and don't know how to get started, there is a webinar on Monday Nov 8 @7pm. Sign up here If you are looking to broaden your horizons and start coaching people - in life, business, health, wealth or any other area of development that you have a passion for - then attending our webinar is a must.

Coaching V Telling

4/11/2021

Giving advice can be a complete waste of your time. Here's why ...
When training clients, we should be looking to create individuals who think for themselves, rather than ones that just do as they’re told. Offering ideas and options might sound useful - and they will guide people's actions - BUT you run the risk of making them dependant on you for the answers!
Telling only really works as a short-term solution. No matter how many times you tell someone to use their mirrors before changing speed and direction when driving, you will need to repeat, repeat, repeat, your instructions until you’re blue in the face or the penny drops. There has to be a quicker way to enable someone to change their behaviour, wouldn't you agree?
Telling someone what to do, especially when it falls on deaf ears, is a waste of your time. If people rely on you for the answers, they will lose motivation to think for themselves. What's the solution?
It has to be coaching!
It's quite simple really, if we want to influence a change of behaviour, and you want to stimulate someone's thinking, then telling negates the ability for someone to think for themselves.
If you are interested in coaching for driver development, The BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development is the course for you.
If you want to know more about becoming a coach, we have a webinar you can attend on Monday November 8th @7pm, register here.

There are some great testimonials below from people, who are currently going through the Programme:

Suzie Cokayne 'I am approaching day 6 of the Tri-Coaching ‘Excellence in Coaching’ course. I would like to let people know what a great course this is. I feel sad when I think about not attending it any more. I have learnt so much already, more than I realised I would! Yes, the course focuses on skills needed to be a great coach, structuring and delivering coaching conversations and powerful questions, but there is also so much more. It gets you thinking and feeling like a coach. It prepares you for setting up your coaching business. And it leaves you enthusiastic about growing and developing as a coach. If you’ve got any inkling about wanting to develop yourself as a coach then I can highly recommend this course. I can see it helping me just in everyday situations at home and work already. Can’t wait for the next 3 days of training and to get started with my new career!'

Ray Seagrave 'Attending this course has been a game changer for me. Delving deeper than I have ever been before into the power of coaching and the knowledge and skills required to help coaching clients unlock their growth potential. Susan and Graham take you by the hand and guide you through what at first might seem a daunting prospect of holding a powerful coaching conversation. They help you discover your inner strengths, reflect, and set personal goals for your own development into and around the subject. Their enthusiasm for your success is always on show. Supporting you and bringing you to a point of deeper understanding and excitement about your own personal options for the future. You will get the most from the course if you are open minded to new ideas and concepts, open to learning and prepared to be challenged to grow knowledge and understanding on a number of levels. If your passion is helping with the personal development of others and seek a deeper knowledge and understanding of the coaching process then this course is for you. You will make some great like minded friends on the course that support you and your development. You will also achieve some personal challenges along the way and become excited, positive and re-energised with new goals set around your future in coaching. I highly recommend this course for those with a real interest in coaching for a living or developing their current coaching skills up a number of levels.'

Neil Wightman 'Wow, what a decision I made to sign up for the excellence in coaching course with Tri-coaching. It has surpassed all of my expectations, fuelled my desire to become an accredited coach even more and ignited my thirst for learning. The confidence gained already excites me. I feel I'm on the path to unlocking my potential as a certified coach. Recommend to everyone - total value for money.'

We look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards The Tri-Coaching Team Excellence in Coaching - 'the ultimate coaching solution' Tel: 0800 058 8009
